In a 12-week trial published in PLOS ONE, researchers at McMaster University asked a pointed question: could a very short, very intense workout match a much longer, gentler one? They took 25 sedentary men and split them into two groups, each training three times a week.
The short-workout group followed a sprint interval protocol that lasted just 10 minutes. It opened with a two-minute easy warm-up, included three all-out 20-second sprints on a stationary bike with two minutes of easy pedaling between them, and finished with a three-minute cool-down. Add up the genuinely hard effort and it came to about one minute per session. The comparison group did the traditional thing instead: 50 minutes of continuous, moderate-intensity cycling, plus a similar warm-up and cool-down.
After 12 weeks, the results were close to a tie on the measures that mattered. Both groups improved their peak oxygen uptake — a core marker of cardio fitness — by roughly 19%, with no meaningful difference between them. Insulin sensitivity and markers of muscle mitochondrial content improved similarly, too. The short group simply got there with about one-fifth of the time and exercise volume. The lead researcher, Professor Martin Gibala of McMaster University, summarized it cleanly in the study's accompanying McMaster University announcement: "Our study shows that an interval-based approach can be more efficient — you can get health and fitness benefits comparable to the traditional approach, in less time."
What "Outperforms" Really Means
It's tempting to read all this as "short workouts are better than long ones," but that's not what the study found, and the distinction protects you from disappointment. The intervals matched the longer sessions; they didn't beat them on fitness. Where they win is on time. You get a comparable return for a much smaller investment, which is a meaningful kind of "outperforming" if your real obstacle is the clock rather than the effort. It's the same time-efficient logic fueling interest in other brief, hard sessions, including research into how 10 minutes of hard exercise may influence the body in other ways.
Two honest footnotes belong here. First, this was a small trial in previously sedentary men, so it's a promising signal rather than the final word for everyone. Second, the protocol the researchers actually tested ran 10 minutes, not 11. The 11-minute version below is a practical adaptation with a slightly longer, gentler cool-down — a small, comfortable cushion rather than the exact lab recipe.
