Three ways to pay a gym
Route 1: A budget chain. Planet Fitness publishes a national rate card, which makes it the cleanest budget benchmark available. Its membership page states that Classic memberships begin at $15 a month and PF Black Card memberships at $24.99, subject to an annual fee of $49, with prices varying by location and state and local taxes possibly applying. A club-level page captured in September 2026 showed a $1 promotional startup fee, which the model uses.
Route 2: A mid-tier chain. Most mid-tier chains, including Crunch, LA Fitness, and Gold's Gym, only show dues after you pick a club. EōS Fitness is the exception found in this research: its memberships page lists its top Will Power tier at as low as $29.99 a month, with an annual membership fee of $59.99 that may apply and a $2.99 monthly service fee that is waived for members who pay by ACH bank draft (California members pay it regardless). The model uses the ACH price and shows the service-fee version as a variant.
Route 3: Boutique classes. Many boutique studios are individually owned franchises that set their own class-pack and membership prices, and none of the brands checked for this analysis publishes a national class-pack rate. Orangetheory does publish one number: its membership page gives a recommended retail price of $35 for a casual visit, while noting that each studio is individually owned and prices vary. The boutique route is therefore modeled as pay-per-class at $35, which is the upper bound of what a regular would pay. Packs and memberships at a local studio would lower it.

Route 4: Adjustable dumbbells and a bench. BowFlex lists its Results Series 552 SelectTech dumbbells at a compare-at price of $479 for the pair (5 to 52.5 pounds each, in 15 settings) and its 5.1S adjustable bench at $499. When prices were captured on September 18, 2026, both were on sale, at $399 and $349. The model uses the $978 list total as its base case and shows the $748 sale total alongside it.
Route 5: A power rack, barbell, plates, and bench. To keep the pricing consistent, every piece comes from one manufacturer. Rogue Fitness lists its Bolt-Together R-3 power rack at $870, the Ohio Bar in black zinc at $305, a 260-pound set of Echo bumper plates at $583, and the Flat Utility Bench 2.0 at $195. That is $1,953 before shipping and tax, and the rack alone stands just over 90 inches tall with a 53-by-34-inch footprint.
Route 6: Bodyweight plus a few accessories. The lightest setup pairs a Rogue Jammer pull-up bar, which bolts into the wall studs above a doorway, at $150 with Rogue's $75 pull-up package of three Monster Bands. The total is $225, and nothing about it recurs.
