When you cut your sleep short, your body does not simply feel tired — it recalibrates the hormones that manage hunger. A frequently cited University of Chicago study found that after a stretch of restricted sleep, participants' leptin (the fullness hormone) fell by roughly 18 percent, their ghrelin (the hunger hormone) rose by about 28 percent, and their reported hunger climbed by around 24 percent, with the strongest pull toward calorie-dense, carb-heavy foods.
The effect can show up quickly. A controlled laboratory study found that ghrelin was about 22 percent higher after a single sleepless night than after a full seven hours of rest.
The pattern also holds over the longer term. Population data hosted by Stanford Medicine links consistently short sleep with lower leptin, higher ghrelin, and a higher body mass index.
It is worth being honest that the science is not perfectly tidy. Not every study reproduces the exact same hormone shifts, and timing appears to matter, with late-night sleep loss showing stronger effects than early-night loss. Even so, the overall pattern holds: when sleep runs short, appetite tends to run high.
