Almost everything on the laser menu falls into one of three buckets, and understanding them is genuinely most of the battle.
Ablative lasers: the deep renovators
Ablative lasers, which include carbon dioxide (CO2) and erbium (Er:YAG) devices, work by removing the outer layers of skin through controlled heat. Think of them as a deep renovation. Because they take the surface down and let it rebuild, they produce the most dramatic change in wrinkles, scars, and rough texture. That power comes with the longest recovery and the highest risk of side effects such as scarring or lasting pigment change, especially in deeper skin tones. These are the strongest tool in the drawer, and they ask the most of you in return.
Non-ablative lasers: the quiet remodelers
Non-ablative lasers, such as Fraxel Dual and Clear + Brilliant, heat the deeper layers of skin without stripping the surface away. The results per session are gentler and build gradually as new collagen forms, but the trade is wonderful for busy lives: little to no visible downtime. These devices are the reason "lunchtime laser" became a phrase. They shine for early aging and maintenance, and they usually work best as a short series rather than a one-time event.
Light-based treatments: the color correctors
Then there is intense pulsed light, better known as IPL, and its close cousin BroadBand Light (BBL). Technically these are not lasers at all. Instead of a single focused wavelength, they flash a broad spectrum of light that homes in on color in the skin, targeting brown pigment and red vessels. They are the workhorses for surface discoloration with minimal downtime, and they belong on the same menu even though the physics differ. One more word worth knowing is fractional. It describes how a laser is delivered rather than a separate category. That intact surrounding tissue speeds healing, which is why fractional versions of both ablative and non-ablative lasers have largely replaced the older, full-surface approach.
