Before you can judge whether a kit is worth it, it helps to know the cast of characters. Most women's hormone panels pull from the same short list, and each hormone answers a different kind of question.
The hormones on the menu
Follicle-stimulating hormone, or FSH, comes from your pituitary gland and helps your ovarian follicles grow and mature each cycle. It shows up in nearly every menopause and fertility kit. Luteinizing hormone, or LH, is its close partner and is the surge that triggers ovulation. Estradiol is the main form of estrogen your ovaries produce, and progesterone rises after ovulation to prepare the uterine lining. Together these four form the backbone of a typical reproductive panel.
A few kits reach further. Anti-Müllerian hormone, or AMH, is produced by your ovarian follicles and is considered one of the best available lab markers of ovarian reserve, meaning your remaining egg supply, though it tells you nothing about egg quality, as Cleveland Clinic explains. Thyroid markers such as TSH and free T4 sometimes appear because thyroid trouble can quietly disrupt your cycle. Prolactin, another pituitary hormone, can throw off ovulation when it runs high. How your sample gets collected
The other thing that varies is how you actually give a sample. Some kits ask for a few drops of blood from a finger prick, which you blot onto a card and mail to a lab. Others use saliva you spit into a tube, and menopause strips often use urine.
