Not Always Just Too Much Coffee
Almost everyone's hands shake a little sometimes, after too much caffeine, a poor night's sleep, or a stressful morning. A fine, persistent tremor that sticks around, though, can occasionally point to something worth understanding. A subtle shake in the hands is, as Harvard Health explains, a classic sign of an overactive thyroid, often traveling with a racing heart, restless sleep, or unexplained weight loss.
The pattern of the tremor offers helpful clues. Essential tremor, the most common type, usually shows up during action, like when you're holding a coffee cup or threading a needle. A tremor that's most noticeable when the hands are resting in your lap has a different signature. You don't need to play detective here, but if a tremor is new, persistent, or slowly getting more obvious, it's a clue worth bringing to your doctor, who can sort out the cause with some simple tests.
