As MS develops, its symptoms can extend well beyond those first signals, touching movement, sensation, thinking, and mood. Grouping them makes the range easier to hold in your mind.
Movement and coordination. Weakness, muscle stiffness and spasms, tremor, and unsteady walking are common. In more advanced cases, mobility can be significantly affected.
Sensation. Alongside numbness and tingling, some people experience an odd, brief electric-shock sensation that runs down the spine when they bend their neck forward, known as Lhermitte sign.
Vision. Blurred or dimmed vision, temporary loss of sight in one eye, loss of color vision, and double vision can all occur. Reassuringly, MS rarely leads to permanent blindness.
Fatigue. This deserves its own spotlight. NINDS describes fatigue as one of the most common and most disabling MS symptoms, and it is often out of step with how active a person has actually been. This is not ordinary tiredness that a good night's sleep fixes — many people describe it as a heavy, whole-body drain that can arrive without warning.
Thinking and memory. MS can bring changes sometimes nicknamed "cog fog": trouble with concentration, memory, multitasking, or finding words. Some degree of these changes affects a majority of people with MS at some point, so they are common rather than unusual. Mood and emotions. Depression is common with MS, and anxiety and emotional changes can occur as well. These are a real part of the condition, not a personal failing, and they are worth taking as seriously as any physical symptom.
Other symptoms. Bladder, bowel, and sexual function can be affected, and some people notice slurred speech or dizziness.
A small rise in body temperature — from a fever, a hot day, or a workout — can temporarily make MS symptoms feel worse. This is often called a pseudorelapse, and unlike a true relapse it usually eases once you cool down, rather than signaling new nerve damage.
