At this stage, your body is doing its job. It's flagging the deficit and asking for fluids. Most of the time, slow sips of water over the next hour or two are enough to settle things back to baseline. If you've been sweating heavily or you're out in the heat, a drink that includes electrolytes can help your body absorb and hold onto the fluid more efficiently than plain water alone. Moderate Dehydration: Time to Slow Down and Refill Carefully

This is also the stage where things get measurably mental. Rehydrate with fluids that include electrolytes (sodium and potassium), since you've likely lost those alongside water, and your body absorbs salted fluid more efficiently than plain water when it's working to catch up. An oral rehydration solution (ORS) is one option; an electrolyte sports drink or a clear broth is another. Severe Dehydration: A Medical Emergency
Severe dehydration is the rung where home solutions stop being enough. The body has lost so much fluid that the systems running on it begin to fail, and drinking water can't restore volume fast enough to catch up.
The signs are different in kind, not just degree. Confusion or disorientation. Fainting, or feeling like you're about to. A heartbeat that's racing and weak. Breathing that's faster and shallower than normal. Going eight hours or more without needing to pee, or producing urine so dark and scant that it's clearly wrong. Eyes that look sunken. In hot conditions, skin that's hot and dry to the touch and has stopped sweating altogether. That last one is heat stroke, and the CDC's guidance on heat-related illnesses describes it as a true medical emergency, with the body temperature climbing rapidly and sometimes reaching 106°F or higher.
This is the moment for emergency care. Calling 911 or getting to the nearest emergency room is the right call. While waiting for help, moving the person to a cool place, loosening any restrictive clothing, and applying cool compresses can buy time. If they're awake and able to swallow, small sips of water or an electrolyte drink are fine, but the real treatment will be IV fluids delivered in a medical setting. That's not a failure of effort at home, it's just biology. At this level of fluid loss, intravenous rehydration is what your body needs.
